Blog 4: A Failed Project
Technique 4: Soap Flowers
It was bound to happen.
I actually really liked my idea for this project.
I was planning on a sort of mini-collaboration with Helen who is doing soap carving. I was going to use her scraps, melt them down, and turn them into flowers. As you can tell...didn't go too well.
Let's just say I had quite a few meltdowns.
I also ended up breaking the handle of a cup (I don't know how I managed to do that either) and getting a huge gash on my thumb. WHAT FUN
Let's start from the beginning
STORY TIME!
Ok children, sit your little tushies down on a bean bag chair, grab some healthy pretzels, and let Auntie Allie tell you a little story of failure.
In my vlog, I showed something I was working on, which was a little bag with soap scraps from Helen. My own little present from her. It was a dandy cold afternoon :)
I was planning on making it all aesthetic too. See? I had all my supplies laid out and it was PERFECTLY planned
I dumped a little soap out, put it in the microwave, followed all the directions on the strange website and......
This. This is what I got. An explosion and a messy microwave.
So I tried a bigger bowl...maybe that'd fix the explosion...right?
WRONG
So I went to a Youtube video, asking wise old Youtube tortoise how to melt soap properly...and this. After three hours of trying to melt soap..I decided enough was enough. But I was still going to try and get the little liquid-y soap I had and turn it into the flower petals.
Did that work? No. No it did not.
And that, my children, is the story of Allie actually giving up on a project. I did my best, wasted hours upon hours, wasted a bunch of soap, and so I cannot continue with this job. I'll probably try to make paper flowers later though. I just need some old newspaper from someone.
Anyway, there's a lesson to be learned from this. Not all stories are success stories and you can't be good at everything. I've had some struggles before too, I just never really depicted them because I got too frustrated just thinking about it.
If someone else wants to try to make the flowers and can show me how to do it...be my guest.

PSA
I don't know if anyone heard, but I am collecting plastic water bottles, metal cans, paint, empty yogurt containers, duct tape, hot glue, cardboard, old clothing, and any newspaper for the big project I have planned. I produce a lot of trash, but I haven't been storing it for long enough to have obtained enough trash for the idea I have in mind right now. Thanks in advance!
